    20 March 2020: Coronavirus Update

Today, in increasing efforts to contain and prevent the further spread of coronavirus, the Government has ordered all theatres to officially close until further notice. Although we would all wish that the “show could go on”, this is not possible at the present time – public health and safety must come before all else, though we share your disappointment at the necessary temporary halt to performances.

Please keep watching for information of rearranged productions once these unprecedented measures have been lifted and offer your support where you can.

The Scene One+ Team hope you stay well, comply with all the precautions that are being put in place for your safety in the meantime, and join us when the curtain goes up once more.

As Covid legal restrictions are eased, it's important that everyone feels safe to enjoy returning to live theatre. Please check with the venue if you have any questions of what to expect on your visit and respect any social distancing measures that the venues may have in place for the safety and protection of audience, companies and staff.

    The Importance of Being Earnest

All Saints' Dramatic Society returns from lockdown with a production of Oscar Wilde's much-loved comedy of manners, 'The Importance of Being Earnest'.

Two young gents have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives. Jack Worthing has invented a brother, Ernest, whom he uses as an excuse to leave his dull life behind to visit Gwendolen Fairfax in the town. Algernon Moncrieff decides to take the name Ernest when visiting Jack's young and beautiful ward, Cecily Cardew, in the country. Things start to go awry when they end up together in the country and their deceptions are discovered.

The play is directed by Peter Nunan, while the cast includes John Sivewright and Jon Cockeram as the young bounders, Jack and Algernon, with Susanna Greenwood and Lauren Turner appearing as their love interests, Gwendolen and Cecily.  Mary Almeida features as the fearsome Lady Bracknell and additional support comes from Phil Vivian and Jenny Wise as Doctor Chasuble and Miss Prism, and Ian Bray and Mark Richards as the butlers, Lane and Merriman.

'The Importance Of Being Earnest' opens on Wednesday 15th September at the De La Salle Theatre at St Peter's School, St Catherines Road, Southbourne, BH6 4AH, with further performances on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th September.  Evening performances are at 7.30pm, Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.  Box office opens 18th August, tickets cost £10 and can be bought by phone - 07548 100770 - or online at  https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/asds (online booking fee applies).

On tour across Dorset and Hampshire

    Blackbox Theatre Company

    Abigail's Party

Abigail’s Party runs from 20 October – 4 December 2021, with performances across Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire and the Isle of Wight.

Following their critically acclaimed and sell out tour of Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit this summer, BlackBox Theatre Company are back on the road again this autumn with Mike Leigh’s seventies classic, Abigail’s Party.

    Do you like Demis Roussos?

Aspirational Beverly and her put upon husband Laurence are hosting a drinks party for new neighbours, Angela and Tony, together with mild mannered divorcee, Sue, whose teenage daughter, Abigail, is also having a party a few doors away.  As the gin and tonics flow small talk turns to outrageous flirting, marital discord escalates and the thin veneer of middle-class respectability begins to peel away.

This iconic suburban comedy of manners is as relevant and grotesquely funny today as it was back in 1977.  Full of wicked one-liners and 70s' nostalgia, and as familiar as a cheese and pineapple hedgehog, Abigail’s Party is an absolute joy and firm favourite with audiences of all ages.

BlackBox are fast becoming one of the South’s leading professional touring theatre companies, with Abigail’s Party marking their 5th touring production.

A full list of tour dates, ticket prices and means to book tickets is available via Blackbox Theatre Company's website

    TOWARDS ZERO

by Agatha Christie and Gerald Verner

The play, directed by Paul Dodman, is adapted from Agatha Christie’s 1944 novel, which she described as one of her favourite stories. Also in the cast are David Beddard, James Bourner, Rob Cording-Cook, Chris Durham, Tony Feltham, Lindsay McGowan and Richard Neal.

This amateur production of Towards Zero is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.

    Out of Focus

An overbooked village hall leads to hilarious confusions! As the locals arrive for the various activities, they suddenly find themselves involved in Evonne's, the Vicar's wife, first ever pantomime. There is bossy Brownie leader, Helen, trying to get her claws into delicious David. Sexy secretary Linda is threatening to derail Bob and Kath's marriage. Wayne is more concerned with finding a phone signal than remembering his cues and will anyone ever actually want to listen to one of Leonard's illustrated slide shows on steam trains, spiders or Genghis Khan? Before long it's a chaotic mix of painted sandwiches, broken wands, and an embarrassing incident in Tesco's wine aisle

"How will they sort this mess out?!"

A warm welcome and licenced bar awaits you at Maskers' easy-to-find Studio Theatre. Plenty of local car parks are available off Shirley High Street (free after 6pm). See website for further location and parking details.

    The Edge of Darkness

It soon becomes apparent that Emma is familiar with certain aspects of the rather isolated, coastal house, but why is she spooked by a small harmless silver bell, a portrait on the wall, and knives - and why does she react to certain Russian phrases?

This amateur production of “The Edge of Darkness” is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD a Concord Theatricals Company.

    Season's Greetings

    By Alan Ayckbourn

Cheating at snakes and ladders, fighting over comic books, a bungled infidelity beneath the tree, the usual disastrous Christmas Eve lamb, the dreaded annual puppet show and even maybe a murder… Christmas has arrived in the Bunker household along with family and friends. But as the children lurk just out of sight, it's the adults who are letting the side down.

Superbly crafted. One of Ayckbourn’s finest works” – Daily Telegraph

“Mordantly hilarious Christmas farce. A classic of drunken disasters and misrouted passions round the tree” – The Independent

Ticket prices: £12 (standard), £9 (OAPs and students) and £6 members of BLTC. Available via Bournemouth Little Theatre's website: bournemouthlittletheatre.co.uk
