PREVIEW – The Wizard Of Oz

Wimborne Musical Theatre Society (WMTS) are performing the timeless and classic musical The Wizard Of Oz next week from Tuesday 25 June to Saturday 29 June at the Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne.

One of the reasons we chose this show is to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the original MGM film starring Judy Garland, but also because it is such a joyful and heart-warming story for people of all ages.

The film was based on the wonderful novel by L Frank Baum written in 1900! Our version is based on the RSC stage version, which was specially adapted from the original MGM 1939 film by John Kane, the prolific script writer of many successful TV sitcoms. It was first performed in 1987 by the RSC in London.

That doesn’t mean to say we are talking Shakespearean!

The show features all the music and lyrics from the MGM film, so has all those well known songs such as ‘Over The Rainbow’, ‘Ding Dong The Witch is Dead’, ‘We’re Off To See The Wizard’ and ‘If I Only Had A Brain, …A Heart, …The Nerve…’ among many others.

The story line is simple: “Like so many girls her age, little Dorothy Gale of Kansas dreams of what lies over the rainbow. One day a tornado hits her farm and carries her away over the rainbow to another world.” And as we travel the universe of Dorothy’s imagination, we meet some weird and wonderful characters.

This wonderful show is performed by WMTS’ experienced and seasoned performers who have wowed audiences at the Tivoli for many years.

And this year we have a special performer playing Toto, Dorothy’s pet dog. We have the delightful border terrier, Bramble, who is herself a star in her own right having been in TV ads and promotional campaigns. Bramble is owned by Jodie Mongrubah Forbes who runs, her own dog training business. Bramble has been a revelation and great fun!

The show will be performed at the Wimborne Tivoli Theatre from 25 – 29 June. Tickets are available from the Box Office at

We made a conscious decision to offer special ticket prices. Tickets are a mere £15 with £13 concessions for Senior Citizens and £10 for children under 16 for all performances.
