Synopsis
Guys And Dolls is an exuberant musical set in 1950s New York, where gambling is prohibited. Nathan Detroit defies the law by running a floating crap game, to the eternal disappointment of his fiancée of 14 years, Miss Adelaide. Then, when Nathan needs $1,000 in a hurry, he bets Sky Masterson that he can’t take the straightlaced missionary Sarah Brown on a date – setting another unlikely couple on the path to romance. This exciting, roller coaster of a musical features a host of lovable characters, plenty of dance action and standout ensemble numbers including ‘The Oldest Established (Permanent Floating Crap Game)’, ‘Luck Be A Lady’ and ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat’.
This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International. All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI.
Cast breakdown
Nathan Detroit (late 20s – early 40s, baritone) – a small time businessman who thinks he needs to hit the bigtime before life with Adelaide can begin
Miss Adelaide (late 20s – 30s, alto) – the star act at the Hot Box Club and long-suffering fiancée who is increasingly desperate to get married
Sky Masterson (late 20s – 40s, baritone) – a clever, confident, professional gambler who likes high stake bets and falls head over heels for Sarah Brown
Sarah Brown (late 20s – early 30s, soprano) – the sheltered and straightlaced but nonetheless passionate Sergeant of the local Mission
Arvide Abernathy (50s – 70s, baritone) – Sarah’s grandfather, a gentle and wise man who is able to see the good in everyone
Harry the Horse (late 20s – 50s, baritone) – a local crook and tough guy who is respected in the gambling community
Nicely-Nicely Johnson (late 20s – 50s, tenor) – one of Nathan’s loyal lackeys, eager to please him, always cheerful
Benny Southstreet (late 20s – 50s, baritone) – Nathan’s right hand man, a committed gambler who is both cunning and resourceful
General Matilda Cartwright (late 30s – 50s, mezzo-soprano) – regional director of the Save a Soul mission, committed to charitable work but realistic
Big Jule (late 20s – 50s) – a big time tough guy gambler who has travelled in from Chicago, eventually revealed to be a cheat and a bully
Lieutenant Brannigan (late 20s – 50s) – a tough, no nonsense police officer who is trying to stop the gamblers once and for all
Ensemble of distinctive characters including Hot Box dancers, Havana Club dancers, Save a Soul band members (actor musicians welcome), crap shooters and more.
About SOS Presents
We are Southampton’s oldest amateur musical society, having been founded in 1924 – so we will be 100 years young in 2024! For many years we were known as Southampton Operatic Society, but we now go by SOS Presents and perform modern musicals with large casts (30+) in professional theatres. We are committed to maintaining very high production standards (professional theatre, paid band, excellent set, costumes, props) and we are always keen to welcome new members wanting to support us on stage as performers or behind the scenes in many different capacities.

The information evening, audition preparation evening, auditions and rehearsals will take place at Bitterne Park School, Dimond Road, Southampton SO18 1BU.
Rehearsals are on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7.15pm to 9.45pm. (Please note the unusual timings are to comply with the venue’s rules on vacating the premises by 10pm as a courtesy to neighbours).

Membership details
Auditions are open to all, but if you are cast you will need to join SOS Presents as a member (£30 per annum) and pay an additional show fee of £80. The total fees of £110 equate to £5.80 a week for a 19 week rehearsal period; show fees can be paid by instalments.
If you wish to audition but cannot attend on Monday 12 February 2024 please email: committee@sospresents.org and we will try to make arrangements to see you before the auditions evening. Unfortunately we are not able to see candidates after the official audition evening and we are unable to accept video auditions.
