Trial By Jury & G&S Favourites In Concert

150th Anniversary of comedy Trial By Jury by Gilbert & Sullivan

The stunning Merley House in Wimborne will be ringing to the songs of Gilbert & Sullivan on Saturday 5 April as Bournemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Productions, better known as Bournemouth GaSP, will be performing a concert of Gilbert & Sullivan favourites alongside Trial By Jury.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Trial By Jury, the second Gilbert & Sullivan collaboration, Bournemouth GaSP are performing this one act show in concert at Merley House. To complement Trial, the second part of the concert will be a selection of most loved choruses and solos taken from The Pirates Of Penzance, Iolanthe, HMS Pinafore and more…

The principals in Trial By Jury have impressive credentials: Fiona Aucott, who plays Counsel for the Plaintiff, is recreating the role first performed by her Great Grandfather in the original production 150 years ago in 1875. He was the cousin of Richard D’Oyly Carte who brought Gilbert and Sullivan together and created the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. As a result, Fiona has been a devoted G&S fan since her youth and performed many principal roles from the G&S canon. Counsel for the Plaintiff is a particular favourite role because of the family connection.

The Learned Judge will be played by John Simpson, who has appeared with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and ENO. The Musical Director, Bruce Vyner, was also a member of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and has performed internationally and on film and screen.

Eleanor Riley is an experienced G&S leading lady, and her performances have included Mabel and Yum-Yum. David Robinson has a long record of playing the humorous roles, including Louis and Koko, in G&S and delighting audiences. In Trial, he is reprising the role of the Defendant from Bournemouth GaSP’s production at the Lighthouse Theatre.

Trial By Jury concerns Edwin, the Defendant, who has broken off his engagement and left bride-to-be Angelina, the Plaintiff, at the altar. The trial is full of humour and chaos, and the Jury is divided. Will they side with the charming yet swindling defendant, the captivating plaintiff, or will the Judge have the final word?

Bournemouth GaSP are an award-winning group, who have been performing Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera for over 60 years in local theatres and other venues. Their previous show at Merley House sold out quickly – so book your tickets now.
