Singin’ In The Rain began its life not as a stage show, but as one of Hollywood’s most iconic musicals. With its unforgettable songs, timeless humour, and that joyful rain-soaked dance number everyone knows, it has remained an audience favourite for decades. With classic scenes like the sofa flip, and musical moments that are now etched into musical theatre history, it’s a big show with big expectations and I’m delighted to say that Bournemouth Musical Theatre have more than met them. Their take on Singin’ In The Rain at The Regent Centre delivers a wonderful cast, dazzling visuals, and all the nostalgia you could hope for.
Let’s talk technicals because this show was a visual treat from start to finish. It was clear that the production team had made a lot of effort to stay true to the original film, and it really paid off. The clever use of projection throughout created a dynamic, ever-changing backdrop that added depth without distracting from the action. The set itself may have seemed simple in build, though that may be down to the directing wizardry of Rob Arrowsmith, but it was brought to life beautifully with vibrant imagery, especially during the show’s big musical numbers.
What made this production truly special, though, was how completely immersive it was. While the cast delivered consistently excellent performances centre stage, I found myself equally engaged by the scenes unfolding behind and around them. The attention to detail was stunning, making every moment feel alive. And then, of course, came the rain, a jaw-dropping moment during the titular number ‘Singin’ In The Rain’. It was fabulously staged and magical. I could have watched it again and again.
A huge round of applause must go to Beth Gibson-Green for her exceptional choreography. The dancing in this show was slick, playful, and an absolute joy to watch. Every number was packed with energy and enthusiasm, delivered with such precision and passion by the cast that you couldn’t help but smile throughout. This, paired with the fabulous costumes, which were authentic, colourful, and full of charm, added even more richness to the production.
It would be remiss not to mention the brilliant band, led by James Stead. This may be an unusual well done but credit where it’s due, not only did the band sound fabulous, but the balance between the music and vocals was spot on. Everything sat exactly as it should which is a real testament to the skill behind the scenes.
The cast, quite simply put, were phenomenal. James Doherty-Box took on the iconic role of Don Lockwood and played it like he was born for it. Effortlessly charming and vocally superb, he had all the presence and polish you’d expect from a classic leading man. He was brilliantly paired with John Bishop as Cosmo Brown, who brought great humour and just the right amount of cheeky mischief. He had the audience laughing on more than one occasion. Both of their energy was infectious.
Michelle-Jane Wright was a beautiful Kathy Selden. She captured the perfect balance of strength and vulnerability, and she was a joy to watch. All three of the leads danced and sang with such ease and control, not a moment of breathlessness or falter in sight. It’s a true skill to make something so demanding look so effortless.
Suzy Hill deserves her own moment of praise as the wonderfully dreadful Lina Lamont, a character famous for her ghastly voice and even worse diction. Suzy delivered this with hilarious comedic precision and made the most of every moment she had on stage.
Every single cast member added something perfect to this show; the ensemble radiated energy, passion and commitment. Every person involved should be incredibly proud because the audience were completely immersed from start to finish. In fact, I sat next to someone who seemed genuinely confused that it was an “amateur” production. He was right to be confused, there was absolutely nothing amateur about this production whatsoever.
So, in summary, this show is a 10/10 and a must watch if you get the opportunity. There are three shows remaining in the run, but it will be coming to an end on 31 May 2025. A huge thank you, BMT, for a fabulous evening and the best of luck with the remaining shows. If last night was anything to go by, you’ll absolutely smash it.
